About the Artist

A little about myself as an artist…

Art has been calling my name since childhood! There has never been a time in my life where I haven’t been in the middle of one project or another. Having the ability to create something with my own hands for myself and for others is a gift that I am thankful for every day.

I take inspiration from all aspects of my life. I spent over ten years of my life living in Asia, which formed much of the basis for my sculpted dolls. As an artist, I feel that the development of my artwork is almost as important as the finished piece. I have always been a perfectionist, which means that many of my pieces are quite tedious to create. In my opinion however, detail is an essential part of any artwork and you will not find a piece of artwork that I have produced that has not been created with every detail in mind.

As a child, I was an avid knitter. My grandmother taught me when I was seven years old with a set of junior needles and a ball of baby pink wool. I now have over two dozen sets of needles and every type of yarn you can imagine! My passion has only grown over time, and I now use this skill quite liberally within my work. Much of my art is made from wool or paper, sometimes both together.

Making my own paper has also become a technique that I like to employ from time to time in my practice. Combining this with my love of drawing allows me to produce artwork that differs from most things that are out there these days. In recent years I have developed a fascination with the human body and anatomy. I’ve focused many of my pieces on organs and muscle structure, using both soft sculptural techniques and 2D practices.

I am constantly finding inspiration from a rather large collection of decorative knickknacks and dolls that I have found myself building over the years. Babushka dolls in particular have formed a large basis for my art. It is not unusual for friends and family to hand me a box of random objects that may someday ‘come in handy’!

I love what I do! Getting up in the morning and building something out of nothing, but an idea in my head and the materials at my disposal is an amazing feeling. It’s what makes me the type of artist that I am… one that loves creating something for you!
